As the ancient city had been under attacks over years, it was protected by The Hellenistic Wall with three entrances through the gates of The Magnesian Gate, the Koressos Gate and the Harbour. Since it was founded in the 10th century BC as one of the Greek colonies, and had been invaded by several emperors and kingdoms, it was influenced by many cultures and religions.

Therefore the city had temples such as Temple of Isis, Temple of Domitian, Temple of Hadrian, Temple of Serapis as well as basilicas and churches such as The Double Churches and the Early Christian Basilica.

Vehicles are not allowed within the ancient city therefore you’ll start the walking tour of Ephesus from the upper or the lower gate of the city. It takes minimum an hour to walk from one gate to the other therefore comfortable shoes are recommended.

From May to October, especially in July and August, as it gets really hot, hat and sunscreen are advised.
