As being one of the largest cities, it was surrounded by roads, streets and squares such as Curetes Street, Marble Road, Arcadian Street, Domitian Square and being the second most populated ancient city of its time, the Ephesians built the Celsus Library, Ephesus Theatre and Odeon, Vedius Gymnasium, Commercial Agora, State Agora, a Brothel, Ephesus Stadium, Theatre Gymnasium, Bath of Varius Ephesus, Scholastica Baths for themselves and the tradesmen visiting the city, as well as the monuments dedicated to heroic Ephesians such as Heroon, Octagon, Memmius Monument, fountains such as Hydrekdocheion, Fountain of Pollio, Fountain of Trajan.
As the ancient city had been under attacks over years, it was protected by The Hellenistic Wall with three entrances through the gates of The Magnesian Gate, the Koressos Gate and the Harbour. Since it was founded in the 10th century BC as one of the Greek colonies, and had been invaded by several emperors and kingdoms, it was influenced by many cultures and religions.
Therefore the city had temples such as Temple of Isis, Temple of Domitian, Temple of Hadrian, Temple of Serapis as well as basilicas and churches such as The Double Churches and the Early Christian Basilica.
